Why being online is good ???

From this project I have looked a lot at social media and being online and a lot of people have negative opinions about it however, I think it can be a good thing for example it’s good for communication. An article by Lucy Sanderson published on Terrafermamedia.com explains that things like Facebook, Skype and messenger is the “glue bonding long distance friendship and families.” This is kind of like the internets version of pen pals really and this can create new friendships that might have never happens unless they where online.

From a personal new my mum lived in Canada for a number of years and created a friendships there, but when she came home the internet and social media helped her stay in touch with the friendships she made while over there. However, online friends can be just the same as real friendships and they can grow apart just like real friendships do, it doesn’t matter if it was online or in real life. I believe that social media and being online can create friendships in which people might struggle in real life being of such things like social anxiety. Social Media can also ‘create communities‘ Sanderson says it brings ‘like minded people into a community where people feel safe to discuss different subjects without being judged.“

I believe this is a very true statement as I myself are a part of online communities for e maple I live to bake so I’m a part of a group on Facebook where we all support and help each other with our baking need and I can ask for advice I the people in the groups are always so supportive.

Also something which Sanderson talks about is “social media gives everyone a voice“ some people that are naturally very quiet can be so different online and raise their opinions

even though in the real world they might struggle to voice their opinion they find it easier to speak online.
